GitHub Pages URL Configuration

Current Situation

Your website repository is named website, which means GitHub Pages serves it at: https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/

The configuration has been updated to work correctly with this URL.

Why This Happens

GitHub Pages has two types of sites:

  1. User/Organization Site - Repository named username.github.io
    • URL: https://username.github.io/ (no subdirectory)
    • You can only have ONE of these per GitHub account
  2. Project Site - Repository with any other name (like website)
    • URL: https://username.github.io/repository-name/
    • You can have MANY of these

Your repository is named website, so it’s a Project Site and gets the URL: https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/

Your Options

Option 2: Change to Root URL

URL: https://ahuffmyer.github.io/

Pros: - ✅ Cleaner URL without /website/ - ✅ Looks more professional

Cons: - ❌ Requires renaming the repository - ❌ You can only have ONE site at the root URL - ❌ Requires updating all links and documentation

What to do: 1. Go to repository SettingsGeneral 2. Scroll to the “Repository name” section 3. Rename from website to ahuffmyer.github.io 4. Update _quarto.yml: yaml website: site-url: "https://ahuffmyer.github.io" 5. Commit and push the changes

Option 3: Use a Custom Domain

URL: https://yourname.com/ (your own domain)

Pros: - ✅ Most professional - ✅ Complete control over URL - ✅ No GitHub branding in URL

Cons: - ❌ Requires purchasing a domain name ($10-15/year) - ❌ Additional DNS configuration

What to do: 1. Purchase a domain name 2. Configure DNS settings (see GitHub Pages documentation) 3. Add custom domain in repository SettingsPages 4. Update _quarto.yml with your domain

Current Configuration

The following files have been updated to use the correct URL https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/:

  • _quarto.yml - Site URL configuration
  • README.md - Documentation
  • DEPLOYMENT.md - Deployment guide
  • SETUP_GITHUB_PAGES.md - Setup instructions
  • QUICKSTART.md - Quick start guide
  • SUMMARY.md - Summary document
  • VERIFICATION.md - Verification checklist
  • DEPLOYMENT_FIX_SUMMARY.md - Fix summary

Recommendation

Keep the current configuration with URL https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/

This requires no action and works immediately. The /website/ in the URL is a small trade-off for the simplicity and flexibility of keeping your current repository name.

If you strongly prefer to have https://ahuffmyer.github.io/, follow Option 2 above to rename your repository.

Questions?

  • Will my site work now? Yes! After deploying, visit https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/
  • Is the /website/ in the URL bad? No, it’s completely normal for project sites on GitHub Pages
  • Can I change it later? Yes, you can rename the repository at any time

Current Status: ✅ Site is configured to work at https://ahuffmyer.github.io/website/
